Brief Summary:

The 25th edition of Strandfontein AFC’s Tournament by the Sea is an Under 14 Boys and Under 16 Ladies football tournament hosted at Strandfontein Sports Complex in Strandfontein during 27^th, 28^th and 29^th March 2026.

The event aims to bring together young soccer enthusiasts, foster sportsmanship and promote physical activity among the youth through a high-quality and competitive platform.

It seeks to engage the local community, encourage youth participation in sport and position the venue as a premier destination for youth sporting events. The tournament provides a valuable opportunity for young athletes to showcase their talent.

Participating clubs were from various football districts and suburbs across the Cape Town Metropole from Mitchells Plain, Langa, Mandalay, as well as Southern Suburbs and Northern Suburbs.

2. Objectives of the Tournament

• This event aims to bring together young soccer enthusiasts, foster sportsmanship and promote physical activity among the youth. 
• It aims to organise a high-quality, competitive Under Boys 14 and 16 Ladies Football tournament.
• It aims to engage the local community and encourage youth participation in sports.
• It aims to promote Strandfontein Sports Ground as a premier venue for youth sports events.
• To secure sponsorship and partnerships with local businesses and organisations.
• The event is primarily a fundraising event for Strandfontein AFC
• It aims to stimulate economic activity within the Greater Strandfontein and Mitchells Plain area
• It aims to be a platform for young athletes to shine

Ladies

Description of format: 2 groups of 4 per team played in round robin

Number of matches played: 18 matches
Duration of matches: 20 minutes per half/40 minutes full match

• 1^st placed team of group A vs 2^nd placed team in group B in Champions semifinal with the winner with the reverse happening in Group B and A for 2^nd semifinal.
• 3^rd placed team of group A vs 4^th placed team in group B in Plate semifinal with the winner with the reverse happening in Group B and A for 2^nd semifinal

Boys

Description of format: 8 groups of 4 per team played in round robin

Number of matches played: 77 matches
Duration of matches: 20 minutes per half/40 minutes full match

• 1^st and 2^nd placed teams in groups progress to Champions Knockout.
• 3^rd Placed team in groups progress to Plate Knockout
• 4^th Placed team in groups progress to Shield Knockout

6. Highlights of the Tournament

The 25th edition of Strandfontein AFC’s Tournament-by-the-Sea went down to the wire, with Far South neighbours, Ubuntu Football Academy and Rising Stars, having to go into extra time after playing to a goalless draw in the boys under-14 final. One goal each by Qhamani Mthungatha and Kamvalam Teyise sealed the deal for Ubuntu Football Academy.

In the Ladies Division, perennial tournament winners, Cape Town Roses, beat Ubuntu 2-0.

The difference-maker was Siyamthanda Macingwana, who scored both goals in a clinical performance.

In Match 17 group match between Devonshire Rovers vs Saringa Spurs, we saw the fastest recorded goal scored at the start of the match, with a recorded time of 3 seconds by Devonshire Rovers player Anzio Velasco.

9. Media & Marketing

Marketing and Media were primarily through the Club’s social media channels, posters and newspaper articles in the Plainsman.

Team entry posters and Vendor application posters were circulated on above channels in December 2025.

A radio interview was also held with The Voice of the Cape on 7^th February 2026, featuring radio presenter Mr. Ian Pakoe with Tournament Director Shaheed Gabier and Strandfontein AFC Life Member Mr. Robert Quinn.

10. Challenges & Areas for Improvement

Uncertainty arose of the support from the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCAS) to provide Emergency Medical Services with DCAS ultimately providing the service.

The quality of playing fields at Strandfontein Sports Complex was a huge concern before the start of the tournament, ultimately Strandfontein MFMC provided adequate playing fields for the tournament duration.

11. Conclusion

The 25^th Edition of the Tournament by the Sea was a huge success, it brought together competitive youth sides in what was widely praised as a well organised event. The standard of football was high and intense and the children and spectators enjoyed it.

Matches ran on time and the standard of match officiating was extremely high.

On offer was a variety of vendors which lend to a carnival atmosphere on the Sports Complex.
